Print the Parts
Print all the parts and components out with a 3d printer. Including the rayfish, the box, the cover, the decorations, and the support box. The printing process requires around 12 hours.
The files are provided, and use bamboo studio app to open the files and use a 3D printing machine to print all the parts out.
Suggestion:
-print more small components as you may fail to assemble them in your first try.
Solder the Electronic Components to the Breadboard
Solder single row pin headers to the breadboard, in order to put all the electronic components on the breadboard. Including the servo motor, the LED lights, the MP3 player, the touch sensor and the SD card reader.
Suggestion:
-follow the photo above, use masking tape to secure the other end of the single row pin headers, making sure it adheres as closely as possible.
-feel free to extend the wires’ length as to fit the correct spaces of the LED lights and the MP3 player.
Make the Connections
This music box works by using a 360° servo motor to turn two gears in an up-and-down motion, allowing the upper gear to drive a stepped wire mechanism.
We can make the stepped wire mechanism first, make sure each step has a length around 1.5 cm, in order to fit the Securing device (photo 2), the final look should look like photo 3.
Then, make the connections with wire, pull 6 wires with the length 25cm and make 6 wire loop clips so that we can connect the wings of the ray to the steeped wire mechanism.
Drill holes between the 3D-printed parts of the ray fish, connect them with cotton threads.
Suggestion:
-try to make the wire loop clips as round as posiible so it has a perfect space for the two knots to work. (photo 4)
-make the stepped wire machanism directly in one wire instead of sticking two seperate parts together, it will fall easily.
-there will be some 3D-printed parts used to fasten onto the stepped wire mechanism, use hot glue gun to stick them on the 25cm wires first, then fasten them to the stepped wire mechanism as you will want to test if the gear is turning smooth or not.
Assemble the Parts
Now, take the hot glue gun and secure the assembly that holds the gear and the manta ray head into the notch on the lid. Next, attach an L-shaped support strip to the back. This will make sure the middle wire stays fixed in the center of the stepped mechanism, with the gear positioned on the left.
You can also mesure the places for the LED lights with the 3D printed parts. (photo 2)
Also, you can try assembling one side of the ray fish onto the machanism and see whether it works or not.
Add the cap of the upper box at last, make sure the ray fish can work properly.
Suggestions:
-remember to add the two locking clip (3D-printed parts) to the sides of the upper box, as to prevent the gear from moving up and down. (photo 2)
-you can start to decorate the box (optional)
Test the Breadboard
Write the sequence with touch points.
E.g. touch point 1 makes the gear rotate and the LED light up.
This is the part which you can create your own sequence and add your own songs.
Test the breadboard with Arduino IDE and a PC.
Use screws to secure the second gear to the servo motor's horn. (photo 3)

Suggestion:
-test the breadboard seperatly with the music box first, check if the second gear can drive the first gear to rotate.
-test whether the lights and sound works properly or not.
-leave a space below the cover of the box as to fit in the servo motor and the gear.
-download the MP3 files you like into the SD card first.

Add Touch Points
Solder the copper wire to copper strips, then tape the other part to the touch sensor.
Then tape the copper strip to the decorations and add them to the box. (photo 3)
Suggestion:
-again test them before assemble them to the box.
Decorate the Music Box (optional)
Last, colour the ray fish and the box. You can also add more decorations, like glitter and pearls.
Your Manta Ray Movemen music box is done! With movements, sounds and lights. ENJOY!
