For this project you will need:

  1. 2 half coconut shell (I used the shells from coconut shell ice cream.)
  2. Popcorn kernels
  3. a pencil (for the handle)
  4. Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Fill the Coconut Shell

First place both coconut shell halves on a flat surface.

Next fill one of the shells about halfway with popcorn kernels (the kernels will create the rattling sound when you shake the finished maraca).

Next, place the pencil so that one end rests inside the shell (see picture).

Gluing the Maraca Together

Carefully place the second coconut shell on top of the first, making sure not to spill the popcorn kernels.

First, using the hot glue gun, glue around the edge where the two shells meet. Hold the shells together until the glue begins to set, then allow the glue to cool completely.

Once the glue has cooled, your maraca is ready to use! When you use it do not shake it to hard because the pencil could break.

If you would like you could even personalize your maraca by:

  1. Painting the coconut shell.
  2. Adding beads, shells, or other decorations.
  3. You could even try different things other than popcorn kernels, like rice, dried beans, or small beads, to make different sounds.

Have fun making your own recycled musical instrument!
