Memento – a Pocket-Sized Memory Game With ESP32-S3 and Round Touch Display
Memento is a compact memory game inspired by the classic Simon concept, developed for the Waveshare ESP32-S3 Development Board with a 1.28-inch Round Touch LCD.
Watch the sequence of colors, memorize it, and repeat it correctly using the touchscreen. With each round, the sequence gets longer and the challenge increases.
Everything fits into a small, battery-powered keychain-sized device — a simple game to play, but a great challenge for your memory!
And although Memento may look like a fairly complex project at first, it is actually surprisingly simple to build. You don't need advanced electronics, programming, or soldering skills to make one. I have tried to explain every stage of the build in detail, step by step, so that the project is accessible even to beginners. If you follow the instructions carefully, you should be able to build your own Memento without any particular previous experience.
Supplies
Waveshare ESP32-S3 Development Board with 1.28" Round Touch LCD
Male Connector 2 PIN - JST 1.25mm
3D-printed enclosure – top and bottom parts
Keyring (optional)
Some wires 30 AWG
Heatshrink tube
Soldering iron
Preparing the ESP32 Connector, On/Off Switch and Piezo
Start by preparing the 12-pin cable supplied with the Waveshare ESP32-S3 board.
Memento only requires four connections from this connector, so carefully remove the unused wires/pins, leaving only:
- Pin 1 – GND
- Pin 3 – RESET
- Pin 5 – GND
- Pin 8 – GPIO 16
Refer to the Waveshare pinout diagram and double-check the pin positions before removing any wires from the connector.
Once the four required wires have been identified, cut them to approximately 35–40 mm in length, measured from the connector. This length is sufficient for the internal connections while keeping the wiring compact and easy to arrange inside the Memento enclosure.
Strip a small amount of insulation from the ends of the wires and prepare them for soldering.
On/Off Switch
The small slide switch is used as the On/Off switch for Memento.
Although the switch is connected to the ESP32-S3 RESET pin, it does not physically disconnect the battery. Instead, when Memento is switched off, RESET is connected to GND, keeping the ESP32-S3 in the reset state and the device inactive.
Solder the wire from Pin 1 (GND) to the center terminal of the slide switch.
Then solder the wire from Pin 3 (RESET) to one of the two outer terminals.
The remaining unused outer terminal can be carefully removed with a small pair of side cutters, as shown in the pictures.
Protect the soldered connections with heat-shrink tubing to prevent accidental short circuits and provide additional mechanical strength.
When the switch connects RESET to GND, Memento remains inactive. Moving the switch to the other position releases the RESET pin and allows the ESP32-S3 to start normally.
Piezo Connection
Next, connect the piezo element, which will be used to generate Memento's sound effects.
Make the following connections:
- Pin 5 (GND) → Black wire of the piezo
- Pin 8 (GPIO 16) → Red wire of the piezo
Solder the wires together and protect each connection with heat-shrink tubing.
Make sure that the tubing completely covers the solder joints and that no exposed conductor remains visible.
Connector Completed
The ESP32 connector wiring is now complete.
The modified 12-pin cable provides all the connections required for the On/Off switch and the piezo sound output, while the shortened wires help keep the assembly compact and tidy enough to fit inside the Memento enclosure.
Interruttore On/Off
Il piccolo switch a slitta viene utilizzato come interruttore On/Off di Memento.
Effettuate i seguenti collegamenti:
Installing the Wiring Into the Lower Case
Take the wiring assembly prepared in Step 1 and install it into the lower part of the Memento enclosure.
Start with the On/Off slide switch. Insert it into the dedicated slot from the inside of the case, making sure that the actuator protrudes correctly through the opening and can move freely between the two positions.
Gently press the switch into its housing until it is properly seated. Make sure that the wires are not pinched or under excessive tension.
To secure the switch in place, it is recommended to carefully deform a small amount of the surrounding plastic using the tip of a soldering iron, creating a simple retaining point that prevents the switch from moving out of its housing.
Do not overdo it: only a very small amount of plastic needs to be softened and displaced. Avoid touching the switch itself with the soldering iron and be careful not to deform the enclosure excessively.
Next, place the piezo element into the circular recess at the bottom of the enclosure, with the brass side facing the case.
Carefully arrange the wires around the inside of the enclosure as shown in the pictures. The wiring should remain as flat and compact as possible so that it does not interfere with the ESP32-S3 board when the device is assembled.
Once everything is correctly positioned, secure the piezo in place with a small piece of adhesive tape. This keeps it firmly against the bottom of the enclosure while still allowing it to produce sound through the holes in the case.
The lower part of the enclosure is now ready for the next assembly step.
Iniziate dallo switch On/Off.
Preparing the Battery
The next step is to prepare the LiPo battery for installation inside Memento.
If your battery is already equipped with the correct 2-pin JST 1.25 mm connector, there is no need to replace it. In this case, you only need to shorten the battery wires as described below.
If the battery has a different connector, replace it with a 2-pin JST 1.25 mm male connector with wires, as shown in the pictures.
Due to the very limited space available inside the Memento enclosure, the battery wires should be kept as short as possible. In either case, adjust the cable length to approximately 25 mm, measured between the battery and the connector.
When modifying the battery wiring, make sure that the positive and negative wires never touch each other. It is strongly recommended to cut and work on one wire at a time to avoid accidentally short-circuiting the LiPo battery.
Make the following connections:
- Battery positive (+ / red) → Red wire of the JST connector
- Battery negative (– / black) → Black wire of the JST connector
Before soldering, slide a small piece of heat-shrink tubing onto each wire.
Solder the corresponding wires together, then individually cover each solder joint with heat-shrink tubing. Make sure that the connections are completely insulated and that no exposed conductor remains visible.
Important: Before connecting the battery to the ESP32-S3 board, carefully check the polarity of the JST connector. Do not rely only on the wire colors: verify that positive and negative correspond to the correct pins on the board's battery connector. Reversed polarity may damage the board.
The battery is now ready to be installed inside Memento.
Uploading the Precompiled Firmware
Install the provided precompiled firmware (remove the .txt extension from the files) using the ESP32 Flash Download Tool.
Important: This programming step should be completed before connecting the battery and the 12-pin cable to the board. This prevents the ON/OFF switch from accidentally holding the ESP32 in RESET during programming. In addition, with the battery already connected, the board would remain powered after flashing and might not restart correctly when the USB cable is disconnected and reconnected.
Download and install the ESP32 Flash Download Tool using the link provided with this project:
With the battery and 12-pin cable still disconnected, connect the ESP32-S3 board directly to the computer via USB-C and launch ESP32 Flash Download Tool.
On the first screen, select:
- ChipType: ESP32-S3
- WorkMode: Develop
- LoadMode: USB
Then continue to the SPIDownload page.
Load the supplied firmware files into the appropriate fields and configure the Flash settings and addresses exactly as shown in the reference image. Make sure that each file is associated with the correct address and that the correct COM port is selected before starting the flashing process.
Start the download and wait until the programming process has completed successfully. Do not disconnect the USB cable while the firmware is being written.
Once flashing is complete, disconnect the USB-C cable from the board, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it. Since the battery is not yet connected, this completely removes power from the board and ensures a clean restart with the newly installed firmware. Memento should then start automatically.
After verifying that the firmware starts correctly, disconnect the USB-C cable again. You can now proceed with the assembly steps and connect the 12-pin cable and battery as described in the following sections.
Important: Do not connect the battery or the 12-pin cable before completing this programming and restart procedure.
Installing the Waveshare Module and Battery
We can now install the Waveshare ESP32-S3 module and the battery into the lower enclosure.
First, connect the 12-pin connector prepared in Step 1 to the corresponding socket on the Waveshare board. Make sure that the connector is fully inserted and properly seated.
Next, connect the LiPo battery prepared in Step 3 to the battery connector on the board, checking the polarity once again before plugging it in.
Now carefully position the battery inside the enclosure, as shown in the pictures. Space is quite limited, so the orientation of the battery and the routing of the wires are important.
Arrange the wires around the battery and along the available spaces inside the case. Make sure that no wire is trapped underneath the board, pinched against the edge of the enclosure, or placed where it could interfere with the other components.
The battery must sit flat and low enough to leave sufficient room for the Waveshare module. Before proceeding, gently lower the module towards its final position and check that it can sit correctly in the enclosure without being pushed upward by the battery or the wiring.
Do not force the module into place. If it does not sit correctly, lift it again and rearrange the battery and wires until everything fits naturally.
At this stage, the module does not need to be permanently secured yet. The important thing is to verify that the battery, wiring and Waveshare board all fit correctly together inside the limited available space.
Once everything is properly arranged, Memento is ready for the next assembly step.
Closing the Case and Charging the Battery
The hardware assembly is now almost complete.
Carefully place the upper part of the case over the display. The cover is snap-fit, so no screws or glue are required.
Align it correctly with the lower enclosure and gently press it into place around the perimeter.
During this operation, do not force the two parts together. If the upper cover does not close easily, stop and check the position of the Waveshare module, battery and wires inside the case. Nothing should be compressed, pinched or prevent the cover from sitting correctly.
Once the cover has snapped completely into place, check that it is evenly seated around the entire perimeter.
The assembly of Memento is now complete.
You can connect a USB-C cable to the Waveshare module to charge the internal LiPo battery. The device can also be powered through USB-C while testing it.
TIP: Checking the Battery Voltage
Before installing the upper cover, the software can also display the actual battery voltage in volts.
This can be useful during testing or when checking the battery condition.
During normal use with the case fully assembled, the battery level is instead represented by the battery bars, which provide an immediate visual indication of the approximate remaining charge.
In the next step, we will move on to the software and see how Memento works, including the display interface, battery indicator and the game itself.
L'assemblaggio hardware è ormai quasi terminato.
Software Interface
The Memento interface is designed to keep all the main information and controls visible on a single screen.
TOUCH TO PLAY – Touch the green button in the center of the display to start a new game.
SCORE – Shows the score obtained in the last completed game.
RECORD (HIGH) – Shows the current high score stored by Memento.
RESET HIGH – Touch and hold this area for 5 seconds to erase the stored high score and reset it to zero. The long press prevents the record from being accidentally deleted.
BATTERY LEVEL – The bars at the top center indicate the approximate remaining battery charge. With the plastic top cover removed, the software can also display the actual battery voltage in volts. This feature is mainly intended for battery checking and diagnostics.
SOUND ON/OFF – Touch this area to enable or disable the game sounds.
AUDIO STATUS – Shows the current audio status. When the sound is enabled, this area remains blank. When the sound is disabled, MUTE is displayed.
GAME / VERSION – This area identifies the game and displays information such as the current software version and the creator's name.
How to Play
Memento is a memory game inspired by the classic Simon game.
Touch TOUCH TO PLAY to start a new game. Memento will show a sequence using the four colored areas of the display, accompanied by sounds when audio is enabled.
Your task is to memorize the sequence and reproduce it by touching the same areas in the correct order.
After every successful round, Memento adds another step to the sequence, making it progressively longer and more difficult to remember.
If you touch the wrong area, the game ends and your score is displayed. If the score is higher than the previous record, it becomes the new HIGH score and is stored for future games.
The objective is simple: remember the sequence and see how far you can go!
SOUND ON/OFF – Tocca quest’area per attivare o disattivare i suoni del gioco.
3D Models
The 3D-printed parts were designed to be printed in PLA using a standard 0.4 mm nozzle.
For the best result, I recommend using the lowest practical layer height available on your printer.
I printed the parts on a Bambu Lab P1S using a 0.08 mm layer height, which produced very good results.
Place the parts on the build plate using the orientation shown in the reference image.
Supports can be enabled if necessary, depending on your printer and slicer settings. However, in my case they were not required, and all parts printed successfully without them.
Recommended print settings:
- Material: PLA
- Nozzle: 0.4 mm
- Layer height: as low as practical (0.08 mm used for this build)
- Orientation: as shown in the reference image
- Supports: optional (not required on my print)
