Navia's Hat - Genshin Impact

I've always wanted to make my own cosplay pieces, and now, I've finally gotten to! Follow these instructions to make Navia's hat from Genshin Impact:

Supplies

Software

  1. Inkscape (or any vector graphics software)
  2. Tinkercad (or any 3D modeling software)
  3. UltiMaker Cura (or any slicing software)

Fabric

  1. 1 yard navy blue felt
  2. 1 yard yellow fabric
  3. 2 yards navy blue fabric
  4. 1 meter yellow ribbon
  5. 1 meter navy blue ribbon

Machines

  1. Laser cutter
  2. 3D printing machine

Other

  1. Glue gun or contact cement
  2. EVA foam (5mm thickness), any color
  3. Acrylic sheets, any color
  4. Acrylic paint
  5. Feather
  6. Pompom
  7. Needle & thread

Roses, Bows, and Ruffles

Roses (make two yellow and one blue):

  1. Wrap a ribbon around a card and cut into equal strips. Around sixteen or so is enough. Don't worry too much about making them all exactly the same size; this might help add dimension to the rose.
  2. For each strip, fold the top corners inwards and set them aside for now.
  3. Using a stick, wrap one strip completely around it and secure with hot glue, clean side (i.e., side where the folds aren't visible) facing inwards. Repeat for the rest of the strips and remove once done.
  4. Pass the edges of the finished rose through a flame to prevent the ribbon from unraveling.

If you're having trouble visualizing what to do, this TikTok might help; I used it as a reference.

Ribbons (make one yellow and three blue, one of which should be slightly larger):

  1. Cut a rectangular piece of fabric and fold it twice horizontally such that the top and bottom meet at the center.
  2. Turn the fabric 90 degrees and fold twice horizontally such that the top and bottom meet at the center.
  3. Accordion fold the center and secure with the thread.

Once again, if you're having trouble visualizing, I used this tutorial but modified some of the steps to avoid using a glue gun.

Ruffles (these can go around the whole hat or just a small part, depending on you):

  1. Take a rectangle of fabric and make some folds along its length.
  2. Sew these folds in place and pull the thread to create the shape of the ruffles.

Laser Cutting and 3D Printing

Laser cut (spikes and lace detailing):

  1. Draw or trace the parts using any drawing software.
  2. Import your drawing into your vector graphics software and select "Trace Bitmap."
  3. With this new object, change the stroke color to red and set the size to 0.01.
  4. Save your file as a PDF, and it's ready for laser cutting!
  5. Once done, paint the pieces you have cut.

3D print (jewel piece):

As someone still quite unfamiliar with 3D modeling, I did steps 1 to 2 using a 2D image. However, if you are well versed in modeling, you can go straight to doing it in whatever software you use.

  1. Draw the parts using any drawing software and save as a PNG.
  2. Once you've done this, convert the PNG into an STL file using a site like imagetostl.
  3. Modify the model as needed in your 3D modeling software and save it as an STL file.
  4. In your slicing software, set the necessary parameters such as material, nozzle size, printer type, etc. depending on the needs of your printer.
  5. Save the file as a GCODE and upload it to your printer.
  6. Once done, paint the piece you have printed.

Hat Base

  1. Using EVA foam, cut out a circle (around 40cm in diameter). This will be the brim of your hat.
  2. Cut out a smaller circle in the center. Make sure that the resulting hole can fit your head!
  3. Cut out a rectangle from EVA foam to serve as the crown of the hat. The length should be equal to the circumference of the hole in the center of the circle, and the width should be around 10cm or however tall you want the hat to be.
  4. Cut out slightly larger circles and a rectangle using the navy blue fabric to cover the EVA foam pieces. Cut the edges into triangles to avoid weird folds in the fabric.
  5. Cut out a circle from the felt. This circle should completely cover the brim.
  6. Using hot glue or contact cement, cover the foam pieces with the fabric you've just cut out.
  7. Assemble the hat by forming an open-top cylinder with the smaller circle, wrapping the rectangle around its circumference.
  8. Place the cylinder with its hollow side down into the brim.
  9. Attach the felt circle to the bottom of the brim.

Assembly

  1. Using the ruffles, cover the part where the two ends of the rectangle used to form the crown meet. Secure with hot glue.
  2. Under the brim, attach the spikes with hot glue.
  3. On the opposite side, use a needle and thread to secure a part of the brim to the crown. This will give the hat the floppy shape present in Navia's character design.
  4. On this raised part, attach the larger blue bow using hot glue. On top of it, attach one of the smaller blue bows. Finally, attach the 3D printed jewel on top of it.
  5. In front of the ruffles, attach the rest of the roses, bows, ribbons, and lace detailing with hot glue.
  6. Finish the hat with the pompom and feathers.
