My wife definitely likes cats more than I do. Why? Because I can not stand the litter on my feet. When I reached my wits end, I saw a new litter box online and had some free time over a weekend. So I went to the hardware store and DIYed a pretty good version of the fancy store model. Not exaggerating here but this box stopped like 90–95% of the litter from leaving the box area. I wrote a blog on the physics of the normal litter launch.
It was a GAME CHANGER!!! It was kind of shocking how much cleaner the floor stayed. Instead of sweeping every day, I would just shop‑vac the entry passage once a month and that was it. Two minutes, done! No more crunchy floors, no more litter migrating across the room to exactly where I step out of bed in the morning.
Also, it was more asthetically pleasing in the bedroom. Way better than those sad plastic boxes. It actually blended in instead of screaming “HEY, THERE’S A LITTER BOX HERE.” I thought my cats might take some time adjusting but it only took a day of training them. A few of their favorite treats go a long way in persuasion. The cats had virtually zero issues using it, even though it’s more enclosed than normal.
As stated, I built this a few years back. So I do not have the very exact plans I used to creat the original. It needs to be built around your current litter pan. Thus, it will be custom to each owner. When I used AI to help me revisit some plans and models, to share here free, AI suggested vent holes and a piano hinge. I used some old hinges I had laying around the garage and they proved to be too small. They were strained by the weight of the lid when I scooped the cats litter box out. So, I would suggest using AI’s idea for the hinges.
Please reach out if I can help you with the project. It is so worth it! With today’s hardware prices I think I could build this for around $100.

● Bottom (1): 22.5" x 18.5" (Fits inside walls)
● Lid (1): 24.5" x 20.5" (Slight overhang to avoid pinching fingers)
● Shelf (1): 12" x 18.5" (The mezzanine)
● Divider (1): 14" x 18.5" (Shelf support)
Nail All Pieces Together and Glue
Wood Glue & Panel Nails:
1. Lower Box: Apply wood glue to the edges of the Bottom board. Secure the Sides and the Back to the bottom using panel nails every 4 inches.
2. The Entryway: Cut a 9" or 10" hole in the Left Side panel. The right side is a dead end passageway storage area!
3. The Mezzanine: Install the Divider 10" from the left side. Place the Shelf on top and nail through the side panel and the divider.
4. The Front: Glue and nail the Front panel to close the "vault."
Glue Panel Board As Waterproofing Layer
The Interior Skinning (Liquid Nails)
● Measure & Cut: Cut the white hardboard to fit the floor, all 4 walls, and the top/bottom of the shelf.
● Apply: Squiggle Liquid Nails onto the back of the white panels. Press them firmly into the assembled box.
● Wait: Let the adhesive cure for 24 hours to ensure the panels don't "pillow" or pull away.
Silicone the Seams Around Litter Box
3. The Bio-Seal (100% Silicone)
● Clean: Vacuum all sawdust out of the corners.
● The Bead: Run a continuous bead of silicone along every 90-degree corner where the white panels meet.
● The "Anti-Seep" Logic: Pay special attention to the seam where the shelf meets the back wall. This is where "misses" usually happen. Force the silicone into the crack and smooth it with a wet finger.
Attach Lid With Piano Hinge
4. Final Hardware
● The Lid: Skin the underside of the lid with white material. Attach to the back wall using the Piano Hinge.
