i saw a post on Pinterest from a table that looked like a paper airplane and i absolutely loved it and wanted to make it myself. the table design is from KamberlandCreations! i based this project entirely of a photo also, everything in this project is made from something that was going in the trash or has been laying in a drawer for years. i normally work with wood so for example the clay and paint were laying in a drawer for a while, i had a chair that broke and the foam boards were collecting dust in the garage. so no new things were bought for this project.

a year ago i bought a lot of foam board that mostly weren't used and were collecting dust in the garage. so it was the perfect thing to use. i started by making the base of the paper airplane, this is made out of a board of foam. i cut four pieces (the dimensions are in the photos) with a jigsaw. some of the edges have a bevel these are also in the photos. i made a mistake with the dimension when i did it, so i had to fill that gap up with loose pieces of foam. i layed the paper airplane upside down and glued the two halves together with the hot glue gun.

Legs

i had a chair laying around that broke and forgot to put in the trash, but it was perfect for this project. i cut three of the legs from the base with a jigsaw and sanded the legs. because i am going to paint the legs i first put a white coat on the legs so the other layer will be better visible. when the first coat was dry i sanded the legs again and started to paint the legs to the final color. two are the front of a pencil and the other is the end of a pencil.

Paper Mache

i really dislike the feeling of foamboards so i decided to paper mache the paper airplane so that feeling is gone but there are a lot of extra benefits like it gives extra support, less easily damaged and it gives a chance to hide any imperfections. for paper mache you tear small pieces from a newspaper and then coat it in wallpaper glue. i find this part so fun because you really don't have to think. make sure the whole airplane is covered also in the groves. the important part is that you really let this dry! This can take a few days. after it has dried sand the plane lightly with sandpaper just to get any bumps or any other imperfections out. also if you don't have enough newspapers like i did ask your neighbors if they have any left over, i got a bunch that they were going to throw away.

Last Steps Airplane

the last steps of the airplane is to paint the whole plane white. i did i total of five coats. add blue stripes while making sure that the spacing is the same (inch between each stripe), and a few red lines to make it look like a piece of school paper.

Gum

i attached the legs to the airplane with glue. then shaped clay around the top part of the legs and the bottom of the airplane so it will look like gum(best as i could). when it was dry i lightly sanded it and painted it pink.

is it the best looking piece of furniture? no. is the most sturdy piece of furniture? no. but i had a lot of fun making it and i absolutely love how it turned out, especially knowing that it was made from "trash". the final height is 45 cm, width is 62 cm and the length is 100cm. you can use it as a normal table, i mean i wouldn't stand on it, but you can put plates and mugs on it or any decoration you want!
