Pi Earrings
Wearing Pi earrings on Pi day is a great idea, especially if you're a math teacher. In this tutorial, I am combining Math, 3D design and jewelry making. I made these earrings to wear on Pi Day 2026. I also plan on having my 5th graders design a pair from this Instructable to wear or give as a present for someone else to wear on Pi Day.
Supplies
- 3D Printer
- Filament of any color (I chose red because it's our school color)
- tinkercad.com
- earring hooks with ball and coil (I used silver)
- small nose pliers
Begin Your 3D Design
- Go to tinkercad.com. Sign in or sign up. Click Create and then click 3D design. Now you are at the design plate (This looks like a grid.)
- Drag over the Scribble design. A larger grid screen will appear.
Use Scribble to Design Your Pi Sign
- Click on the pen and draw the Pi sign. I drew the top part first and then added the legs.
- Now, click on the eraser. Click the eraser on the parts you want. Click on Done. It will go back to the previous screen.
Size Your Design
- Your design will be too large. I added the dimensions in the picture so you can minimize it to where the hooks will fit. You can make them as large as you want. However, you will need to make them thin enough for the hooks to fit.
Create the Holes in Your Design
- Drag over the gray cylinder. This is transparent and will create a hole in your design.
- Click on the cylinder. Click the red corner square to make it thin and long.
- Drag it to the top of your Pi symbol. Center it in the middle. Make sure it is going through your design. You can click on the word front to check.
Duplicate Your Design
- Go to the top left hand corner of the screen. Click the double squares. This will duplicate the design. Drag the duplicated design over to the side.
Save Your Design
- This step could be different for everyone. However, I will show the steps for how I have to save my designs for 3D printing.
- Click Export.
- Click STL.
- Click on your download. I have FlashForge on my computer so it saves to that.
- Slice your design. Click Start Slicing. Then click Slice.
- Now, send this to your printer if you have wifi. If not, download it onto a flash drive.
Print Your Design
- Your 3D printer will have choices on the screen. Choose your design and print.
Add the Earring Hooks
- Use needle nose pliers to open the bottom of the earring hook.
- put the earring through the hole.
- Close the earring with the pliers. Make sure you don't do this too tight. The earrings wont dangle.
