This project shows 3D Design in CAD and also Animations with tutorial how to create same "ring", It consist assembly of 3 separated parts which in real life can me made probably but with less sharper edges, and yes it's not weapon.

While thinking what to made for that Map contests, whenever you google Map, world map, etc. you always see compass rose in corner of picture and it's pretty unique. So I used some of compass rose design and placed it in CAD. For people who are not familliar with smaller parts this "ring" is good example where software are pretty restricted for your imaginations and I had different idea of ring head but sadly I have no more time to spend to it. I hope this tutorial is useful for someone.

P.S.

It should be real working compass, but with less accuracy than bigger versions, so it's good gift for your friends and family.

Supplies

Just SolidWorks 2024 :)

EXTRUDING RING AND PREPARING SKETCH

1.png

After you extrude classic 16.5mm ring with width of 1,5mm and ring thickness 0.5mm inside, you have to make sketch of part which you will cut like on photo.

So because ring is round just make 16.5 times Pi and you get Sheet dimensions for your ring because you will use Wrap

WRAP OF EXTERNAL PART

2.png
3.png

So, because Solidworks is so good that it cannot make Wrap cut of more surfaces in same time, you have to separate every Wrap cut like I did. On photo you will see that "pain".

And for every other Wrap cut, you go back to your start sheet and place you wrap where it belongs

CONGRATS YOU STARTED

5.png

Your last wrap should look like on picture, now you go touch grass.

After 2 hours of sellecting every possible outer and inside side for fillet or chamfer your ring should be like on pictures.

P.S. Don't forget to leave enough place for ring head

DESIGN OF RING HEAD

6.png
7.png
8.png
9.png

First we create plane on which you will create "diamond" with Extruded cut with 30 degrees draft. Diamond must be 2.5mm height and with 8 degrees on each side

Now because diamond is created with extruded cut there is no possible way to find middle for new plane so we create second ugly diamond with dimensions on second picture and make plane like so.Also mirror this diamond

For creating those "needles" on 45 degrees follow third picture here and mirror them also for every side.

At end just in same plane make extruded cut with through all option like on picture 4.

IT'S RING NOT BEN TEN CLOCK

14.png

So because previous extruded cut made uglier ring head, we need to add Ben ten clock design on it like on photo 1.

Now to make "connection of ring head and ring prettier first extrude cut part which we don't need, yes sadly again its circle, again. Just follow picture 2.

On cleared place draw compass rose and extrude it, following 3rd picture.

Now copy that sketch and in plane sitting right on ring do same thing, following picture 4-

Again:

Select dozen times edges, because we are not making weapon, it's ring, make fillet edges and also chamfer. Just follow picture 5 design.

FIND YOUR SIDE

15.png
17.png

Following picture make sketch so you can place text of world sides. After that press S type TEXT and "draw" text for every side of map in font Charlemagne 0.1mm height and bolded version. Also extrude by following picture 1 rules.

Middle of rose is needed to be cut for fastener so you can instantly make Hole wizard, or like me, separate first hole than hole wizard.

MAGNETIC NEEDLE AND FASTENER

On https://www.mcmaster.com/products/screws/rounded-head-screws-2~/stainless-steel-button-head-hex-drive-screws~~/?utm find smallest fastener which is not hexagonal, download it and scale if it's needed (because it's kind of hard to find STL parts of smaller dimensions fasteners).

And 10th time for end, drive magnetic needle as it's shown on picture
