I made a tote bag out of one of my old shirts because I simply could not bring myself to waste it.

Pick a Shirt

Find a unused/old shirt.

Cutting the Fabric

Cut about three inches off the bottom of the T-shirt. Then cut the remaining fabric in half from top to bottom. Cut small strips about 1/4 inch apart and about 2 inches long along the bottom edge of the fabric, then set those pieces aside. Also remove the sleeves if your shirt has them.

Sewing the Bottom

Turn the shirt inside out and sew the bottom closed. Sewing it inside out helps hide the stitching when you turn the bag right-side out, giving it a cleaner and smoother appearance.

If You Don't Have Sleeves Skip This Step

Line up fabric tape along either side of the fabric and iron it in place. You may want to watch a video showing how to line up and iron fabric tape. This is the video I watched:

Putting on the Straps

Use the two strips you made earlier and tie them onto the sides of the bag. You can optionally tie knots in the straps to give the bag more character. Also tie a knot at the top to connect the two straps together.

Finishing It With Some Detail

Turn the bag right-side out and go to the back. Using red thread, sew the pink flower lace onto one side of the bag. You could use pink thread instead of red. This part can be completely customized—you do not have to use pink lace!
