Students will be able to create an original story and bring it to life with a robot. Students will design a "movie set" obstacle course, code the robot of their choice to act as the main character and present their story through live narration. The robot used in this project is a Sphero bot.

Supplies

  1. A robot of your choice. A Sphero Bolt+ is used in this project.

The Items for your set can vary. Any Recycled items will work. We used items in our classroom MakerSpace.

  1. Paper (Any Colors to lay down for your movie set)
  2. Cardboard
  3. Markers
  4. Pencils
  5. Tape
  6. Paper Plate
  7. Yarn
  8. Popsicle sticks
  9. Legos and Lego People

Create an Outline of Your Movie Using Story Elements As a Guide

PLAN-This is a VERY IMPORTANT STEP.

Develop a storyline for your movie using story elements (Characters, Setting, Problem and Solution.) Students have been learning about Rising Action, Climax and Falling Action. Write these on a paper before beginning your movie set.

Create the Movie Set

  1. Lay paper out to cover the movie set space. Students were given a 3x6ft space for this project. You can assign any size space. This specific project has blue because their setting is an ocean.
  2. Create your buildings, vehicles, animals, people, etc... using any items of your choice. This Project has a beach with people, boats and dolphins.
  3. Place your items on the paper where you want them throughout the movie.

Beginning Narrator Parts

  1. Look at your Movie/Story Outline to guide you through these steps.
  2. Make an X on the spot on the paper on the floor where you want your robot to start so your coding will be accurate every time.
  3. Begin with narration that will help others understand the movie. There will be narration throughout the movie (Between the robot moving.) Students can write the narration on note cards.

Time to Code

  1. Open the program for your robot. The Sphero Bolt+ runs on the Sphero program- edu.sphero.com
  2. Code the robot to move throughout the movie set. Make sure to remember the narration throughout as well. An example of the coding is included.
  3. Test the coding multiple times and change anything that needs to be improved.

Present the Movie

Present the movie to your peers. Have your narration note cards ready to narrate during the movie. Press START and present your movie. Use the rubric to grade your peers and yourself.
