The DIY Functional Rubik's Cube Bookshelf
This project brings iconic retro geometry to life with a custom, fully functional Rubik’s Cube bookshelf and side table. Built step-by-step from raw plywood sheets, the design features a 3×3 grid of open-cubby storage compartments coated in a sleek satin-black finish. Accentuated with vibrant, precision-cut acrylic face panels in classic Rubik's colors, this piece seamlessly blends playful design with practical home library storage.
Supplies
Primary Materials
- Plywood Sheets: High-grade plywood cut into uniform panels for the individual cubby boxes and central grid framework.
- Acrylic Color Tiles: Precision-cut acrylic sheets with bevelled edges in classic Rubik’s colors (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, White).
- Satin Black Wood Finish: Premium paint or stain for smooth, even coverage across the frame and interior cubbies.
- Wood Glue: Heavy-duty PVA wood glue for robust box joinery.
- Panel Adhesive: Strong construction adhesive or specialized epoxy for mounting the acrylic tiles to the wood faces.
- Concealed Feet: Low-profile, hidden feet or glides to elevate the base off the floor cleanly.
Tools And Workshop Equipment
- Table Saw: For making straight, repeatable cuts on large plywood sheets.
- Clamping Setup: Heavy-duty bar clamps and 90° right-angle corner clamps to hold the cubbies square while drying.
- Measuring & Marking Tools: Tape measure, speed square, and shop pencil.
- Application Tools: Glue brush for clean adhesive distribution, plus paintbrushes or a paint sprayer for the black finish.
- Safety Gear: Work gloves and eye protection.
Digital Blueprinting (CAD & Simulation)
What was added: We are starting in Autodesk Fusion 360. A complete, detailed 3D CAD model of one 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube table/shelf has been developed. This model precisely matches the internal configurations of the open book slots and the central storage cubby defined in image.
What was refined: The dimensioning and tolerances for the interlocking modular core are finalized and visible as simulation lines. The material thicknesses are calculated for CNC cutting.
What will be tackled next: We must transition from digital to physical fabrication, starting with precision-cutting the primary modular components.
Fabrication of Raw Components (CNC & Cut List)
- What was added: Raw 3x3x3 high-grade birch plywood sheets were mounted on a CNC router bed to cut out all interior cubby panels and exterior frame pieces.
- What was refined: Edge paths and joint dados were routed according to the exact dimensions designed in the Fusion 360 model.
- What will be tackled next: Edge-sanding, dry-fitting the core skeleton, and assembling the inner shelf matrix.
Spent the morning on the shop floor running the nested CNC files. Because this build relies on precise open cubbies and interlocking dividers to hold books without visible fasteners, every single cut needs to be dead accurate. You can see the machine routing out the individual birch plywood panels with a fine layer of sawdust gathering on the bed. Off to the side, I've got the cut components organized in stacks, ready for sanding. The grain on this cabinet-grade birch is clean, and the edges came out sharp with zero tear-out. Next up is test-fitting the inner matrix.
Assembling the Core Grid Skeleton
- What was added: The internal 3x3x3 grid skeleton assembled using wood glue, pocket screws, and heavy-duty corner clamps.
- What was refined: Squareness and alignment of the open book slots were locked in; all exposed plywood edges were sanded flush as in the image
- What will be tackled next: Priming, painting the black structural grid lines, and fabricating the colored acrylic face tiles.
Dry-fitting is done, and now the core skeleton is officially glued and clamped up on the workbench. It’s starting to actually look like a Rubik’s cube! I used a combination of wood glue and concealed pocket screws to keep the inner dividers rigid, especially around the open compartments that will support heavy books. You can see the bar clamps keeping everything tight while the glue cures. Checking every angle with a speed square—if this frame is out by even a millimeter, the exterior face tiles won't line up evenly. Once this dries, I'll hit it with a dark primer to start forming those iconic black grid lines.
Painting the Frame and Preparing Colored Tiles
- What was added: Satin black finish applied to the entire wood grid frame; precision-cut acrylic color tiles (red, blue, green, yellow, orange, white) laid out on the table.
- What was refined: Smooth, even paint coverage on all inner book cubbies; beveling edges on the individual acrylic face panels.
- What will be tackled next: Mounting the colored tiles, attaching concealed feet, and styling the finished table with books and decor.
Big progress today. The entire wooden carcass got two coats of matte black paint to recreate the thick plastic grid of an actual Rubik's Cube. While that was drying, I prepped the individual colored face tiles. Instead of painted wood, I decided to use cast acrylic sheets—red, blue, yellow, green, orange, and white—to get that glossy, authentic plastic look. They’re all cut to size with slightly chamfered edges so they sit flush against the black frame. Seeing all the bright colors lined up next to the black carcass is super satisfying. Next step: final assembly and mounting the tiles!
Final Assembly, Styling, and Placement
- What was added: All colored acrylic tiles mounted to the frame; rubber feet added to the base; fully loaded with books, magazines, and a reading lamp.
- What was refined: Final alignment check on all face panels; surface polished to a high gloss finish.
- What will be tackled next: Project complete! Enjoying the coffee table/bookshelf.
It's completely finished and sitting in the living room! The colored acrylic panels were mounted with high-strength industrial adhesive, leaving slight recessed gaps to perfectly replicate a real 3x3 cube. The open compartments hold books vertically and horizontally, and the top acts as a fully functional coffee table. The glossy tiles contrast brilliantly against the matte black structural frame and the warmth of the interior birch wood cubbies. From a digital model in Fusion 360 to a solid, functional piece of furniture—this build turned out exactly as planned!
