The Relic Bangle: Sculpting "Antique Metal" From Paper
This project demonstrates how to create chunky, textured bangles using old tissue paper clay and a specific painting technique. By layering paper clay onto a cardboard base you can transform simple recycled materials into jewelry that resembles heavy, oxidized metal or carved stone. The resulting pieces are lightweight and customizable with any sculpted design.
I created this project to demonstrate how common paper can be upcycled into jewelry. This project focuses on using affordable materials to create custom, hand-sculpted accessories that look like antique relics.
A full video tutorial of the entire process is included below, followed by a step-by-step photo guide.

- One flat brush.

Prepare the Clay
Prepare the Pulp: Shred 2–3 rolls of soft tissue paper or toilet paper into a bowl. Cover with warm water and let soak for 15 minutes.
Strain: Squeeze the water out of the paper manually or through a fine cloth until the pulp is damp but not dripping.
Mix Adhesives: Add 1 cup of PVA glue.
Knead: Mix the ingredients thoroughly. Knead the mixture until it reaches a dough-like consistency. It should be firm enough to hold its shape but soft enough to spread.

Apply Paper Clay
Apply a layer of paper clay over the outer surface and edges of the base. Press the clay to ensure it adheres. Do not smooth the surface completely; leave slight irregularities to create a stone-like texture
Allow the bangle to air-dry for 24–48 hours until completely hard.
