My name is Hakim and I am in grade 8.

This is the Tip of the Iceberg Sanatorium which is a hospital that is heavily secured and made to withstand a lot of natural disasters and war zones.

Supplies

Steel, concrete, 16-24 storage containers of food and medical supplies. Water basin. Wood.

Tip of the Iceberg Sanatorium

Step 1: Inspiration

I chose this idea because it can help protect displaced refugees from war-torn countries by giving them safety from conflicts and natural disasters. This project was inspired to help people in cases of war, such as Palestine, where almost all the hospitals have been destroyed.

A Sanatorium is a place where people can get back on their feet in a fast and meaningful way. They are equipped with a multitude of clinics and rooms to get people up again.

This project is to help people rejuvenate their countries and their homes, and to make new starts in safe places. There are some big sanatoriums that help people for specific issues, like the Muskoka Cottage Sanatorium for diseases. Most sanatoriums were created during the time of the White Plague to treat Tuberculosis, though they can be used for other sorts of problems. These sanatoriums are known for being self-sufficient communities and isolated hospitals with networks of tunnels to treat patients without spreading plagues, as well as providing protection in places of war.

Step 2

Using Tinkercad, I created the Sanatorium. I built a building serving as the “Tip” of the Sanatorium. Using the cube object in Tinkercad, I stretched it to create a platform midway through the Tip of the Iceberg. After that, I constructed the underground part of the building. I then built the main office of the underground section, which houses the dining hall at the intersection of the four sides of the building.

The four sides consist of the medical rooms, the post-medical therapy rooms, the surgery rooms, and the residential temporary condos. You start by getting checked up at the medical clinic for immediate injuries. After you are treated, you can go to the surgery room if you are diagnosed at a surgery level. Once that is done, you can go into the residential homes for safe residence and take post-medical therapy sessions if you have effects that are sticking around, like shell-shock, PTSD, C-PTSD, Grief Disorder, or Acute Stress disease.

There are necessities to survive, and one of the biggest ones is food. I implemented a food compartment at the bottom of the design. There is enough food for 1000 people for 2 years. That may seem like a few Costcos worth of food, but surprisingly, you only need around 15-20 standard 40ft shipping containers of food. The food gets prepared and can be eaten and rationed for up to 4-5 years. This makes for a long-lasting, highly sustainable place for residence.

Reflecting on the Design

Step 3

Reflecting on this project, I made this Sanatorium because I should create a way to help refugees and people displaced by war to find safety and recovery. I think hiding the main medical rooms, therapy clinics, and housing underground gives people the protection they need in a war zone. It was interesting learning how old White Plague sanatoriums used tunnel networks to stop diseases. It was fun turning it into a better safe place and modernizing it. When I researched the food part of the Sanatorium, it amazed me after calculating that keeping 1000 people alive for years doesn't take a massive warehouse. It only takes 15 to 20 shipping containers, which proves that a safe place like this is completely possible to build and sustain.
