Who Wouldn't Want to Relax on a Lotus Like This Capybara? | Air-Dry Foam Clay Tutorial

I Made a Capybara Relaxing on a Giant Lotus! 🌸 | Air Dry Foam Clay Project

I wanted to make something that simply makes you smile, so I created this peaceful little capybara relaxing on a giant pink lotus—with a tiny orange balanced on its head. 🌸🍊

Made with air-dry foam clay, this whimsical scene is full of playful little details and personality. In this step-by-step tutorial, I'll show you how I sculpted and painted the capybara, created the lotus flower, leaves, and other details, and brought the whole scene together.

If you love capybaras, cute clay art, and handmade creations with a little personality, I hope this one makes you smile too!

Supplies

  1. Air-Dry Foam Clay — for sculpting the capybara, lotus flower, leaves, and other clay details.
  2. Sculpting Tools — for shaping the clay and adding details.
  3. Thin Wire — for supporting the clay structures.
  4. Wooden Base — for supporting the entire clay scene.
  5. Glitter — for adding color and sparkling details.
  6. Small Yellow Decorative Pieces —for creating the stamens around the lotus seed pod.
  7. White Glue — for attaching and securing different parts.
  8. Clear Glue — for creating the flowing water effect.
  9. Blue Pigment — for mixing with clear glue to create a flowing water effect.

1. Shape the Body: Take a piece of brown air-dry foam clay and roll it into a thick cylinder. Shape and smooth the clay to create the capybara's round, chubby body. Use a sculpting tool to press a line between the head and body, then use your fingers to shape and define the two sections more clearly.

2. Add the Face Details: Flatten a small piece of dark brown clay into a circle and attach it to the front of the face to form the muzzle. Use a sculpting tool to carve three lines into the clay, creating a three-pointed shape. Then add a tiny round piece of dark brown clay at the top where the lines meet to form the nose.

3. Make the Ears: Use a sculpting tool to mark the positions of the ears. Flatten a small piece of dark brown clay into a thin circle, cut it in half, then attach the two pieces to the marked positions to create the ears.

4. Make the Eyes: Roll two tiny pieces of dark brown clay into short strips, then attach them to the face to create the eyes.

5. Make the Limbs: Roll a small piece of brown clay into a short cylinder and cut it in half. Shape the two pieces into the capybara's back legs and attach them to the body. Repeat the same process to make the two front legs.

Make the Orange and Add Color to the Capybara

1. Make the Orange: Roll a small piece of orange clay into a ball and use a sculpting tool to make a small indentation at the top. Insert a tiny brown clay stem into the indentation, then add a small green leaf next to it. Place the finished orange on top of the capybara's head.

2. Add Color: Use glitter to add a soft blush to the capybara's cheeks, then lightly add color to the rest of the body for a more natural look.

Make the Lotus Center

1. Make the Lotus Seed Pod:Roll a large piece of green clay into a ball and place it into a half-round clay mold, then press and shape the clay inside the mold to create the basic shape of the lotus seed pod. Use large and small round-tipped sculpting tools to press holes of different sizes into the surface of the clay. Let it air dry and hold its shape before carefully removing it from the mold.

2. Make the Lotus Stamens:Cut the yellow decorative pieces in half. Apply white glue around the back edge of the seed pod, then attach the yellow pieces one by one, following the curve around the seed pod. As you attach them, make sure the yellow tips sit slightly higher than the surface of the seed pod.

Make and Attach the Lotus Petals

1. Make the Lotus Petals: Shape a piece of pink clay into a teardrop, then use a sculpting tool to roll it out into a flat petal shape. Use a round-tipped sculpting tool to smooth the center of the petal, then use your fingers to shape the tip into a slightly pointed, upward-curving form, as shown in the picture. Repeat to make several petals in slightly different sizes, then let them air dry.

2. Attach the Lotus Petals:Roll a piece of green clay into a long strip and wrap it around the area where the stamens were attached. Attach the petals to the green clay one by one, keeping the pointed ends facing upward. As you add each petal, adjust its position and the overall shape until the lotus looks full and beautifully open.

Add the Lotus to the Base

5-07-insert-into-base.jpg
5-08-insert-into-base.jpg

1.Finish the Base of the Lotus:Flatten a piece of green clay and attach it to the bottom of the lotus, as shown in the picture.

2. Make the Lotus Stem:Roll a piece of green clay into a long strip and flatten it. Wrap the flattened clay around a piece of thin wire, then trim away the excess clay at both ends, leaving a short section of wire exposed on each end. Insert one exposed end of the wire into the bottom of the lotus, then insert the other end into the wooden base so the lotus stands upright.

Make the Lotus Bud and Leaves

6-11-make-more-leaves.jpg
6-12-add-clay-ball.jpg
6-13-attach-leaf.jpg
6-14-finish-leaves.jpg

1.Make the Lotus Buds:Make a long, slender stem using the same method as before. Shape several small pieces of pink clay into tiny petals, using a pointed sculpting tool to help refine their shape, as shown in the picture. Place a teardrop-shaped piece of clay on top of the stem, then attach the small petals around it, overlapping them layer by layer until they form a lotus bud. Insert the finished lotus bud into the wooden base.

2. Make the Lotus Leaves:Make several green stems in different lengths using the same method as before, then insert them into the wooden base. Roll out green clay into a flat circle, then use a sculpting tool to carve the veins of the lotus leaf. Add a small round piece of clay to the center, then gently shape the edges to create natural curves. Repeat the same process to make several lotus leaves in different sizes and shades of green. Before attaching each leaf, add a small ball of green clay to the top of the stem to help secure it in place, then attach the lotus leaf on top.

Add Color to the Lotus and Create the Water Effect

1. Add Color to the Lotus:Add different shades of red to the tips and backs of the lotus petals to give the flower more depth and richer color. Add a touch of green to the base of some of the petals, then add some gold highlights to the center of the lotus seed pod.

2. Create the Water Effect:Mix clear glue with blue pigment and stir well. Pour the mixture onto the wooden base, then gently spread it around the lotus stems to create the look of flowing water.

Place the capybara on top of the lotus and let it relax among the petals. There's no need to glue it in place, so you can pick it up or move it around whenever you like.

And that's it! Our little capybara has found the perfect place to relax on a giant lotus. I hope you enjoyed making this peaceful little clay scene and watching it all come together!
