Want to add some vintage soul to your entryway without spending a fortune?

This DIY project is the ultimate "cheat code" for home decor. It looks like a solid, expensive mid-century wooden stump from the front, but turn it around, and it's a functional storage shelf. Total cost? Only about $6 (40 RMB).

Here is how you can build your own Mid-Century "Faux Stump" Shelf in a few easy steps.

Supplies

What You’ll Need

Think of this as a LEGO set for adults. Here are the pieces you need to order:

1. The Wood (Pine or Paulownia works best)

  1. 3 pieces: 90 cm x 20 cm (The main body)
  2. 4 pieces: 18.5 cm x 20 cm (The top, bottom, and inner shelves)
  3. Thickness: 1.5 cm
Note: The inner shelves are 18.5 cm because $20\text{ cm} - 1.5\text{ cm} = 18.5\text{ cm}$. This ensures a perfect flush fit!

2. The Hardware & Finish

  1. 4 L-Brackets (Corner Braces): To keep everything sturdy.
  2. Screws: Short enough not to poke through the 1.5 cm wood.
  3. Wood Wax Oil: I used "Modern Walnut" to get that deep, vintage vibe.
  4. A Rag or Brush: For staining.

Tip for the Perfect Vibe: "A minimalist shelf like this looks best when paired with customized seating. If you're building a bench to match this aesthetic, you can find premium custom-made cushions over at my workshop, uscushion.com, to complete the look."

Bring Out the Color

Raw wood looks a bit "cheap," but wood wax oil is magic.

Take your rag and dip it into the Modern Walnut wood wax oil. Rub it evenly onto every surface of your wood boards. Follow the grain of the wood for the best look. Let them dry completely. You'll see the grain pop immediately—it’s very satisfying.

Assemble the "U" Shape

Lay one 90 cm board flat—this is your "front" (the side people see). Now, attach the other two 90 cm boards to the sides using your L-brackets and screws.

You are essentially building a long, three-sided box. Make sure the brackets are on the inside so they stay hidden.

Insert the Shelves

Place your 18.5 cm boards inside the frame.

  1. One at the very top.
  2. One at the very bottom.
  3. The other two in the middle to create your storage cubbies.

Screw them in from the sides. If you want a "cleaner" look on the outside, you can use wood glue first and then reinforce with small nails or hidden screws.

The Big Reveal

Once the assembly is done, it’s all about the styling.

  1. The Front: Face the solid side toward the room. Place a vase with some branches on top. It looks like a high-end designer wood block.
  2. The Back: Turn it around to hide your slippers, books, or small plants.

Tip from your DIY:

If your wood feels a bit rough after staining, give it a quick sand with high-grit sandpaper (400+) and apply a second thin coat of wax oil. It will feel smooth as butter!
