WiFi‑Controlled Dubia Roach Breeding Box (Smart Heated Colony Build)
This project shows you how to build a WiFi‑controlled Dubia Roach breeding box using a ceramic heat emitter, a Sonoff TH16 smart thermostat, and a ventilated 35L enclosure. I designed this system to maintain perfect breeding conditions for Dubia roaches, ensuring a reliable supply of feeder insects for reptiles such as bearded dragons. The build is safe, inexpensive, and easy to maintain — and the WiFi control makes temperature management effortless.
I started breeding Dubia roaches to feed my bearded dragons, but keeping the colony warm and stable was always a challenge. Ceramic heaters get extremely hot, and cheap thermostats fail often. So I built a WiFi‑controlled system that keeps the temperature perfect 24/7, alerts me if anything goes wrong, and makes the colony almost maintenance‑free.
Supplies
- Really Useful Storage 35L Solid Black Box
- Yellow Ceramic Porcelain Lamp Holder (E27)
- 220V Ceramic Heat Emitter
- 2‑Core Cable (0.75mm²)
- 3 × 70mm Soffit Vents
- Sonoff TH16 WiFi Temperature & Humidity Switch
- Fine Aluminium Mesh
- 16 × Cardboard Egg Trays
- Yellow Spray Paint
- LCD Digital Thermometer
- Diall 30A Junction Box
- Grommet Washer Set
- 13A UK Plug
Tools
- Cordless Drill
- 70mm Hole Saw
- 47mm Hole Saw
- 5mm Drill Bit
- Hot Glue Gun
- Screwdriver
- Wire Cutters
- Wire Strippers
- Measuring Tape
- Stanley Knife
Prepare the Lid
- Drill three 70mm vent holes
- Drill a 47mm hole for the ceramic heater
- Cut a 4.7 × 2.7 cm rectangle for the thermometer
- Spray vents yellow (optional)
Electrical Wiring
a) Prepare the Power Cable
- Strip brown (live) and blue (neutral)
- Wire into 13A plug
- Ensure fuse + cable grip are secure
b) Connect Power Cable to Sonoff TH16 (Input)
- Brown → L IN
- Blue → N IN
c) Prepare Heater Cable
- Strip both ends
- Brown = live
- Blue = neutral
d) Connect Heater Cable to Sonoff TH16 (Output)
- Brown → L OUT
- Blue → N OUT
e) Wire the Ceramic Heater
- Brown → live terminal
- Blue → neutral terminal
f) Final Wiring Check
- Plug → Sonoff IN
- Sonoff OUT → Heater
- No earth required (double‑insulated heater)
Ventilation & Thermometer
- Insert vents
- Glue mesh discs inside
- Install thermometer
- Route probe through lid
Internal Setup
- Add egg trays
- Add cardboard tubes
- Add food dish + water crystals
- Add roaches
Sonoff TH16 Configuration
- Install eWeLink app
- Add device
- Set triggers:
- ON at 28°C
- OFF at 32°C
- Test heater
- Monitor for 24 hours
Feeding & Colony Management
Feeding & Colony Management
Food
- Dry chow
- Fresh veg
- Avoid wet foods
Water
- Use water crystals
Breeding
- 28–32°C
- Darkness
- Colony doubles every 6–8 weeks
Cleaning & Maintenance
Weekly
- Remove dead roaches
- Replace veg
- Check humidity & temperature
Monthly
- Replace egg crates
- Clean frass
- Inspect wiring
- Check vents
Troubleshooting
Too Cold
- Heater too weak
- Sonoff misconfigured
- Too much ventilation
Too Humid
- Reduce veg
- Increase airflow
- Add egg crates
Roaches Escaping
- Mesh not glued
- Cracks in lid
- Overfilled box
Final Result
Here’s the finished WiFi‑controlled Dubia Roach Breeding Box. The ceramic heater keeps the colony at 28–32°C, the vents prevent moisture buildup, and the Sonoff TH16 handles all temperature control automatically. The colony breeds reliably, stays clean, and requires very little maintenance.
